Frequently Asked Questions

I'm trying to protect my idea. Will you sign an NDA before we discuss it?
No. I meet with too many startups to sign NDAs with them all. If you become a client, then we'll get the contracts ironed out. Until then, I can't sign NDAs as it would put me in a precarious postion with the other startups I meet with.
Ok, what does this cost & how do you charge?
That depends on the scope of work and the length of time you expect to need. Rates range from $105 - $150 / hr. There's also a 20% discount for purchasing a block of 10 or more hours in the form of a retainer.
Hmm, we can't afford that. Will you take deferred payment or equity?
No, unfortunately not. Please don't take that personally. I'm just not interested in going that route. That doesn't mean your idea isn't awesome and won't make a billion dollars. It's not you, it's me.
Ok, let's move past that. How would this work?
Well, that depends on your company. I can come in and take the role of Acting CTO. Then, when the time is right, I play an active role in transitioning to a full time CTO. I can be very flexible. If, however, your company never needs a full time CTO, then I'll continue to be the Acting CTO role until you do. If you never need a full time one, that'd fine. It's been my experience that most startups focus too much on technology and not enough on developing their customers & their market. The idea is not to over commit before you need to.
So, will you be my technical founder?
I can. It depends on the state of your company and if you can afford me.
So do you do any actual development?
Yes. That fact is part of what makes my offering so unique. At the same that I am meeting with senior management and advising on technology strategy and direction, I can also step in and perform the roles of architect or senior developer, as needed.
Is this just you or do you have others that help you?
It's just me. You're not buying company, process or management consultant. You're getting a genuine partner and someone that's taking an active role in your company.
How do I know you'll be there when I need you?
I only take on a very small number of clients at a time, never more than 3 ( though usually 2 ). I also never put myself in a position to be over committed and unavailable to my clients. I have a long list of references and past clients that can attest to that.
